Vermilion teacher indicted on illegal gambling charges

A local high school teacher has been removed from teaching duties and is now indicted on 23 criminal counts that include money laundering, corruption and illegal gambling, according to Cuyahoga County Court of Common Pleas documents.

Kristina Edmison, who was a teacher at Vermilion High School, is accused of being involved in a gambling operation that included unlicensed slot machines, unsanctioned bingo games and setting up fake businesses for money laundering purposes, according to the indictment.

The scheme reportedly operated from 2018 to 2022.

There were two others charged along with Edmison, including Lee Edmison Jr. and Lee Edmison III. The indictment listed three businesses included in the scheme: Modern Music & Games, K Zip Services and Repairs and LJ Modern Properties LLC.

Dr. David Hile, the Vermilion Local Schools superintendent, sent Edmison a letter on April 15 outlining how the district was moving forward after they learned of the indictment.

This letter is to inform you that I am relieving you of your duties as a teacher for the Vermilion Local School District … with pay, pending the outcome of an investigation into allegations that you failed to maintain the dignity of your profession and to comport yourself in an ethical and lawful manner,” Hile wrote in the letter obtained by FOX 8 News.

According to the indictment, the group placed slot machines that were unlicensed at multiple Cuyahoga County bars. Charity bingo licenses were also used to make it appear like the group was raising money for local youth sports teams, according to prosecutors.

The most serious of the charges include engaging in a pattern of corrupt activity, which is a first-degree felony, according to the indictment.

Edmison has not entered a plea at this time. A Cuyahoga County grand jury investigation is ongoing.
